AVONDALE, La. — Nick Watney won the Zurich Classic for his first PGA Tour title, closing with a 3-under 69 on Sunday for a three-stroke victory over Ken Duke.

Watney, the 25-year-old Californian in his third year on the tour, had a 15-under 273 total at the TPC Louisiana. Duke, who also was seeking his first tour victory, shot a 70.

MOTEGI, Japan — Tony Kanaan saw what was happening, and his strategy was perfect.After trailing the leaders for much of the race, the Brazilian took the lead with four laps remaining and won the Indy Japan 300 on Saturday.Kanaan started from the second row and crossed the finish line at the 1.5-mile Motegi oval 0.4828 seconds ahead of England's Dan Wheldon, giving Andretti Green Racing its first victory of the Indy Racing League season.

NEW YORK — The NHL came down hard Sunday on Calgary, suspending goalie Jamie McLennan for five games and fining coach Jim Playfair $25,000 and the team $100,000 for actions late in Game 5 of the Flames' first-round series against the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday.McLennan was given a match penalty for slashing Detroit's Johan Franzen in the midsection at 17:01 of the third period, one of four penalties the Flames were assessed for aggressive and illegal use of the stick (slashing or cross-checking) in the closing minutes of the Red Wings' 5-1 victory.

WUHAN, China — The top-ranked United States got a tough draw Sunday for this year's women's World Cup, placed in Group B with Sweden, North Korea and Nigeria.Sweden was runner-up at the 2003 World Cup and is ranked No. 4 by world governing body FIFA. North Korea is ranked No. 5, Asia's top team.
