Outlaws coming to town Tuesday

BUFFALO TWP — Call it a tune-up, but it's a tune-up worth winning.

The World of Outlaws Late Model series invades Lernerville Speedway for the "Showdown in Sarvertown"Tuesday night.

The 50-lap feature event pays $10,000 to win, a drop in the bucket compared to the $30,000 top prize and $140,000 overall purse to be doled out at the inaugural Firecracker 100 slated for June 29-30 at the Sarver track.

"There's a lot of drivers who want to get some track time at Lernerville so they'll be ready come the end of June,"track general manager Gary Risch Jr. said.

That means Tuesday's race will draw an even more star-studded field than is customary for this WoOLate Model event.

For most drivers on the WoO circuit, this will be their lone opportunity to check out the track hosting the Firecracker 100.

Among the likely newcomers to the track will be Earl Pearson Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla. who won the 2006 World 100 at Ohio's Eldora Speedway. Pearson has never raced at Lernerville.

WoO stalwarts Shane Clanton and Chub Frank rave about the quality of Lernerville's racetrack.

"I'd put Lernerville in a list of top-five tracks in the country,"Clanton, of Locust Grove, Ga., said. "It's one of the few tracks where it doesn't matter where you start. Even if something happens, you can start dead-last and still win the race."

Frank has won WoO Late Model events at Lernerville before.

"I wish there were more Outlaw shows there," he said.

The WoOLate Models last ran at Lernerville in August of last year. Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y., won the 50-lap race, edging Rick Eckert of York, Pa.

The SPEEDtelevision cameras taped last year's race and will tape Tuesday's event as well. The SPEEDChannel will air the "Showdown at Sarvertown"at 12:30 p.m. May 27.

Entering action last weekend, Clint Smith led the WoOLate Model points race with 633. Frank was second with 621, Clanton third at 619, Eckert fourth at 613 and Steve Francis fifth at 605.

None of those five drivers had won a WoOfeature yet this season.

The Modifieds will also race on Tuesday's card.

Qualifying for late models begins at 7:15 p.m., racing at 8 p.m. Pit gates open at 4 p.m., grandstands open at 5 p.m.

An autograph signing period in the grandstands will begin at 5 p.m.

General admission is $25 for adults, $22 for senior citizens, $20 for ages 11-17, free of charge for kids 10-under. Reserved seats are $27 for adults, $24 for senior citizens, and $22 for ages 11-17.
