Yanks best Bucs, 8-1
TAMPA, Fla. — Mike Mussina was upbeat after his latest start.
Mussina gave up three hits over five scoreless innings in the New York Yankees' 8-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday.
Jason Giambi hit a grand slam off Zach Duke during a seven-run fourth that put the Yankees up 7-0. The DH, who had left wrist surgery in the offseason, has three homers this spring.
"I'm excited where I'm at," Giambi said. "I thought it would be a little bit longer to get my swing back."
Melky Cabrera and Hideki Matsui had RBI singles, and Derek Jeter drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh.
"I don't care if it's spring training or not," said Duke, picked last week as the Pirates' opening-day starter. "I'm mad at myself. I have higher expectations than that. They have a great lineup, but I can't let that inning get out of hand."
Duke allowed seven runs and nine hits in 3 2-3 innings. He walked two and struck out one.
