The Tornado Volleyball Club's 15-and-under Junior Olympics team captured the 10-team Westmoreland Lady Cat Tournament at Franklin Regional High School Sunday, defeating Pittsburgh Elite VBC in the finals 2-1.

On March 3, the squad lost in the finals to Team Highlands 2-1 at the Highlands VBC Tournament in Somerset.

Team members include Jesse Coyle, Amanda Huey, Abbie Druschel, Brynn Maxwell, Lyndsy Wittebort, Erica Kutch, Jocelyn Bachman, Fallon Bachman, Danielle Lloyd, Cortney Hazlett and Chelsea Pallone, all of Butler.

The team is coached by Meghan Lucas.

Students from the New Castle and Slippery Rock Tae Kwon Do America locations participated with thousands of martial artists from across the United States Feb. 17 in an attempt to establish a world record for most rounds sparred in one hour simultaneously.The event was designed to raise money for Project Action to fight juvenile crime and keep youth out of gangs.Area participants were Kelly Labor, Mitchel Grossman, Jessica Guthrie, Peter Hanson, Howard Aspinall, William Aspinall, Alex Aspinall, Megan Cravener, Tanner Lehett, Darin Reese, Madison Kish, Samantha Eppinger, Shawn Eppinger and Floyd Kish.This group sparred 508 one-minute rounds and raised $574.
