The FCA Gems competitive all-star cheerleaders won two championships at the Cheersport Nationals in Atlanta recently.
Pink Ice won the mini large level 2 crown and Sapphires won the junior large level 2 honors. The Gems' other six squads, Emeralds, Turquoise, Tanzanites, Citrines, Rubies and Diamonds, finished second in their respective divisions.
There were 800 cheer and dance teams representing 37 states and Canada at the competition.
FCA Gems will compete in the Cheerpower Nationals March 24 and 25 in Columbus, Ohio.
The Karns City boys and girls basketball teams will both be in action next week at Clarion University's Tippin Gymnasium.KC's boys will face Kane at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the District 9 Class AA semifinals.The girls will play Curwensville at 6 p.m. March 2 in the District 9 Class AA championship game.
CHESTER, W.Va. — Tommy Morrison, the former WBO heavyweight champion, stopped John Castle in the second round in his return to the ring Thursday, 11 years after testing positive for the virus that causes AIDS.The 38-year-old Morrison, who claims he has no trace of the AIDS virus after taking several HIV tests, dropped Castle with a left hook to the head midway through the second of the scheduled four-round fight at Mountaineer Racetrack and Gaming Resort.
AUSTIN, Texas — Dennis Johnson, the star NBA guard who was part of three championship teams and combined with Larry Bird in one of the great postseason plays, died Thursday after collapsing at the end of practice. He was 52.Johnson, coach of the Austin Toros of the NBA Development League, was unconscious and in cardiac arrest when paramedics arrived at Austin Convention Center, said Warren Hassinger, spokesman for Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services.Johnson, a five-time All-Star and one of the great defensive guards, played 14 seasons and retired after the 1989-90 season.
