The Slippery Rock girls basketball team will play Meadville in a District 10 Class AAA first-round playoff game at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Slippery Rock University.

Tickets will be on sale from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Friday at the Slippery Rock High School main office.

LOS ANGELES — Charles Howell III finally ended that nasty habit of finishing second, making three clutch pars in a playoff that delivered a dramatic victory over Phil Mickelson in the Nissan Open.Howell closed with a 6-under 65 and got into a playoff when Mickelson bogeyed the 18th hole. Howell put away the two-time Masters champion with his third straight par save, holing a 3-foot putt on the 14th hole and raising his head to the sky in utter relief.It was only the second victory of his career, and Howell had been haunted by nine runner-up finishes since winning the now-defunct Michelob Championship in the fall of 2002. He already had two runner-up finishes in four starts this year, including three weeks ago against Tiger Woods down the coast at Torrey Pines.

KAHUKU, Hawaii — Paula Creamer put a frustrating second season on the LPGA Tour behind her in a hurry in the season-opening SBS Open.The 20-year-old Creamer won her third LPGA Tour title and first in 19 months Saturday, handling the whipping wind to hold off Julieta Granada by a stroke.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Frank Broyles, who has spent nearly 50 years as football coach and athletic director at Arkansas, will retire at the end of the year.Broyles addressed a meeting of the university's trustees Saturday, ending days of speculation about his plans.Broyles, a three-sport star at Georgia Tech, was the coach at Missouri in 1957 before being hired as Arkansas' coach. He held the post until 1976, and became Arkansas' athletic director in 1974.

DURHAM, N.C.— Greg Paulus hit four 3-pointers and finished with 15 points, and Duke used a fast start to beat Georgia Tech 71-62 Sunday for Mike Krzyzewski's 700th victory at the school.Krzyzewski improved to 700-198 in his 27th season as the Blue Devils' coach.
