Raynor Forsberg
Raynor Morgan Forsberg, 89, of Ellsworth, Maine, died Jan. 8 due to complications from cancer.
Born in Pittsburgh, Oct. 18, 1917, he was the son of Rudolf Percy and Margaret Nuttall Forsberg.
An athlete and avid sportsman, he graduated from Duke University in 1940, enlisted in the Army the day after Pearl Harbor was attacked and served with distinction in Africa, Europe and the Pacific until his honorable discharge in 1945.
He was employed by Gulf Oil and the Molly Co. of Reading and later worked in New York, Chicago and Atlanta for Glidden Paint. His business career spanned nearly 50 years before he moved to Ellsworth, Maine, in 1992 to fulfill his goal of retiring to Maine.
Rather than retire, he turned his skill and energy to volunteer activities and offered considerable time to the Salvation Army and Maine Coast Memorial Hospital and tutored with the adult literacy program through the Ellsworth Public Library.
A devoted son, brother, uncle, friend, soldier and charter subscriber to Sports Illustrated, he cherished personal relationships and greatly appreciated the outpouring of love and support from family and friends over the past several months.
He is survived by a sister, Margaret Forsberg Hodgdon; seven nieces and nephews; and numerous grandnieces and grandnephews.
