SLIPPERY ROCK — Meagan Cook, a former standout student athlete and assistant coach at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, was named assistant women's track and field coach at Slippery Rock University.

Cook has served as assistant strength and conditioning coach at UW-SW since August. She was a Division IIInational qualifier in the hammer throw in 2004, a four-year letterwinner and team captain as a senior.

Cook joins The Rock track and field staff headed by SRUAthletic Hall of Fame member John Papa.

SAN FRANCISCO — Mark Sweeney insists he never had any amphetamines in his locker for San Francisco teammate Barry Bonds to take.Sweeney said Friday he was shocked to learn that Bonds apparently mentioned his name in connection with the slugger's failed amphetamines test last summer. The New York Daily News reported Thursday that Bonds failed the test and initially attributed it to a substance he took from Sweeney's locker.Sweeney moved forward after being told by Gene Orza, the union's chief operating officer, that his name had come up with a failed test for the stimulants. He wasn't informed of the player's name.Sweeney said he was "angered" and "hurt" after hearing the news, adding that he tested several times for amphetamines last season and never failed any of the tests.

SYDNEY, Australia — Kim Clijsters began her retirement year with a victory Saturday, beating Serbia's Jelena Jankovic 4-6, 7-6 (1), 6-4 in the Sydney International tennis final.
