PITTSBURGH — The Butler Catholic seventh- and eighth-grade boys basketball team improved to 16-0 in tournament play by winning the St. Mary's Tournament in Pittsburgh's Lawrenceville section.
The squad went 3-0 in the 12-team, single-elimination competition.
PITTSBURGH — All nine FCAGems all-star cheerleading squads won first place in their respective divisions at the Masters of the Mat held Saturday at the University of Pittsburgh's Petersen Events Center.Jennifer Watterson Walton and Beth Watterson Dittmer, coaches of the Sarver-based organization, won the Program Award and the Diamonds won $5,000 in scholarship money.Individually, Felicia Bordonara placed second and won a $2,000 scholarship while LeeAnn Saiber of Sarver placed fourth and won a $1,000 scholarship.
ERIE — Glenn Reepmeyer's double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds sparked the Slippery Rock University men's basketball team to a 76-65 win over Columbia Union in the consolation game of the Mercyhurst College Tournament on Sunday afternoon.Jamar Scales added 14 points, Matt Schaefer had 12 and Brandon Thompson chipped in with 11 points for The Rock (3-6), which held a 30-25 lead at halftime.SRU was forced into the consolation game after an 89-87 loss to Northwood on Saturday, despite 26 points from Scales.
NEW YORK — NBA scoring leader Carmelo Anthony was suspended for 15 games Monday and six other players were penalized as commissioner David Stern came down hard on both teams after the Nuggets and Knicks brawled at Madison Square Garden.Stern fined each organization $500,000, but there was no separate penalty for Knicks coach Isiah Thomas, who had warned Anthony not to go into the lane before the mayhem started Saturday night.Also suspended: New York's Nate Robinson and J.R. Smith of the Nuggets, 10 games; New York's Mardy Collins, six; teammate Jared Jeffries, four. The Knicks' Jerome James and the Nuggets' Nene each were penalized one game for leaving the bench area during the chaos.
