BEAVER CREEK, Colo. — Andre Myhrer won a slalom for his first World Cup victory Sunday, on a day when U.S. skiers did not deliver before home fans.
Bode Miller went off course 37 seconds into his first run. U.S. teammate Ted Ligety, the Olympic combined champion, was second going into the final leg but straddled a gate. The top American was Jimmy Cochran in 22nd place.
Myhrer was followed by Canada's Michael Janyk and Germany's Felix Neureuther.
SUN CITY, South Africa — Jim Furyk won the Nedbank Challenge for the second straight year Sunday, earning $1.2 million with a two-stroke victory over Sweden's Henrik Stenson in the unofficial golf tournament.Furyk closed with a 2-over 74 for a 12-under 276 total on the Gary Player Country Club course. He opened with rounds of 68, 66 and 68.Stenson, the only player in the 12-man field to break 70 on Sunday, shot a 69. Ireland's Padraig Harrington (75) was third at 8 under, and three-time winner Ernie Els (72) was another stroke back at 7 under.
STATE COLLEGE — Joe Paterno won't let a broken left leg slow him down or knock him out of football.The 79-year-old Paterno said Sunday he intends to lead the Nittany Lions (8-4) from the sidelines at the Outback Bowl on Jan. 1 and coach for at least another couple years.Ordered to stay off his feet since undergoing surgery a month ago, JoePa hasn't been able to pace the sidelines in his rolled-up khakis and blue-and-white jacket since getting walloped by two players during a Nov. 4 game at Wisconsin.Paterno skipped his team's next game against Temple but returned to a Beaver Stadium press box the following week to catch the Nittany Lions' tense 17-13 win over Michigan State in the regular-season finale on Nov. 18.Paterno, who turns 80 on Dec. 21, also learned Sunday that the Nittany Lions' opponent will be No. 17 Tennessee (9-3).
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — South Koreans In-Kyung Kim and Hye Jung Choi shared the top spot in the LPGA Tour's final qualifying tournament Sunday, while 13 other players also earned full exemptions for next season.The 21-year-old Choi closed with a 6-under 67 on LPGA International's Legends Course to match Kim at 13-under 347.Maru Martinez (68) finished third at 10 under, Kimberly Hall (69) was 7 under, Clarissa Childs (71) and 18-year-old Angela Park (73) followed at 5 under.
