Young Brothers Institute announced Sunday that students from its 10 schools raised more than $37,000 during the Nov. 4 break-a-thon.
The event was held to honor martial arts student and instructor Patrick Walker, 24, who died in September after a three-year battle with cancer.
Monies raised will benefit the UPMC Cancer Center Patient Assistance Fund in Pittsburgh, said Master Robert Zang, head instructor of the Cranberry Township school.
All funds donated will go directly to assist with patients' financial needs, said Grand Master Young Bo Kong, head of the tae kwon do institute.
During the adult competition, Kathy Radick of Cranberry Township was named grand champion in the black belt division and Minh Nguyen, a student at Slippery Rock University, was awarded grand champion in the color belt division. Both train at the Cranberry school.
All first-place winners compete for grand champion.
One competitor for the grand championship in the adult division, Michael Sybert, 16, of Middlesex Township swept the men's division, capturing first place in men's patterns, sparring and breaking categories. He also trains at the Cranberry school.
The WPIAL basketball championship games will be held at Duquesne University'sA.J. Palumbo Center in 2007 and 2008.The WPIAL talked with both Duquesne and Pitt about hosting the basketball championships and sought a two-year commitment for the available dates.WPIAL executive director Tim O'Malley said Duquesne made that commitment while Pitt's Petersen Events Center could not.The 2007 WPIAL games will be played March 2 and 3.
SAN FRANCISCO — San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Antonio Bryant was arrested on reckless and drunken driving charges after his Lamborghini was seen speeding faster than 100 mph on a freeway.Bryant, 25, was arrested Sunday night on suspicion of misdemeanor charges of reckless driving, driving under the influence and resisting arrest, police Capt. Kevin Raffaelli said.An officer entering U.S. Highway 101 saw Bryant speed past and tried unsuccessfully to catch him, Raffaelli said. He radioed another officer who pulled over Bryant.The former Pitt star showed "signs and symptoms" of being drunk, and he was uncooperative, combative and verbally abusive, Raffaelli said. He refused to step out of the car, he said.

Jim Furyk was pretty happy with his play all day.Furyk shot a 5-under 67 Tuesday for a one-stroke lead over U.S. Open champion Geoff Ogilvy after the opening round of the PGA Grand Slam of Golf.Woods, the defending champion, has won the exclusive four-man event a record six straight times in seven appearances.
