FOX CHAPEL — Jordan Foley, a senior at Shady Side Academy, was named to the AlleghenyConference Football All-Star team.The Meridian resident was named to the second team on defense at outside linebacker and as an honorable mention pick on offense as a running back.Foley led the Indians with 615 rushing yards and added eight touchdowns, and was second on the team with 94 tackles.
The Butler Catholic seventh- and eighth-grade boys basketball team went 4-0 to capture the recent T.D. Sports tournament title at St. Elizabeth in Baldwin.The 16-team, single-elimination tournament was contested over the past two weekends.Butler Catholic defeated St. Teresa of Munhall, St. Louise, St. Elizabeth and Holy Trinity, the latter in the championship game.Team members are: eighth-graders Bobby Swartwout, John Barkus, Vinny Schmidt, Sam Cleary, Billy Smith, Corbin Seezox and Joey Friel, and seventh graders Michael Connelly, Josh Dymun and Philip Kletzli.The team is coached by Harry Leyland and Rob Swartwout.
PITTSBURGH — Three members of Duquesne University's club hockey team were struck by a hit-and-run driver after an argument at a bar early Monday morning, according to police and school officials.Timothy Fish, 22, of Munhall, was listed in fair condition at Mercy Hospital with a compound fracture and severe cut to his left leg that required surgery, according to police and the hospital.Mike Heath, 22, a forward from Richmond, British Columbia, was treated at Mercy for a neck injury, cuts and abrasions, and then released, officials said. Mark Heier, 22, a defenseman from Chilliwack, British Columbia, refused treatment.Police were searching for a silver Oldsmobile and had the name of one suspect, said police spokeswoman Tammy Ewin.
CHICAGO — Alfonso Soriano, the most-sought after free agent on the market, passed a physical and the Cubs announced Monday they had agreed to a $136 million, eight-year contract.Soriano's deal trails only those of Alex Rodriguez ($252 million for 10 years), Derek Jeter ($189 million for 10 years), Manny Ramirez ($160 million for eight years) and Todd Helton ($141.5 million for 11 years).Soriano had 46 homers, 41 stolen bases and 41 doubles last season with Washington, while batting .277 with 95 RBIs. He became the fourth member of the 40-homer, 40-steal club in major league history.
SYDNEY, Australia — Five-time Olympic champion Ian Thorpe retired from competitive swimming at the age of 24 Monday, saying breaking records and winning medals had lost its allure.Thorpe burst onto the swimming scene as a teenager and swam to 13 world records between 1999-2002, becoming an international star after dominating at the Sydney Olympics.
