SLIPPERY ROCK — The Slippery Rock University intramural sports department will send two flag football teams and two officials to the 2006 National Intramural Recreation Sports Association Flag Football Regional Tournament at Cornell University.
Both teams earned the berths by winning the SRUcampus championships recently.
Dana Gillis of Evans City is the lone Butler County resident on either roster. The regional champion earns a berth in the Flag Football National Championship, hosted by the University of Texas.
Three members of the Karns City girls soccer team have been named all-league for the 2006 season.Junior forwards Allyson Kepple and Michelle Sweeney, along with midfielder Julieanne Scott, received the recognition.SV's Dobrick wins scholarshipsSeneca Valley senior Elyse Dobrick, who recently signed to swim at St. Francis University, was awarded the SFUTrustees Scholarship, which is a four-year academic award, and a four-year athletic scholarship.Dobrick will work toward a five-year master's program in physical assistant and occupational therapy. She is a five-time WPIAL and two-time PIAA medalist, an all-state swimmer as well as a USA Swimming sectional qualifier and a scholastic all-American.
SHANGHAI, China — Tiger Woods bogeyed the last two holes to slip five shots behind leader Retief Goosen going into the final round of the HSBC Champions tournament.Woods, who started Saturday at 8 under after firing a course record-tying 64 in the second round, shot a 73 in cold and blustery conditions to drop to 7-under 209.Goosen was solid, making five birdies and two bogeys for 69, one of only 17 players to break par in the third round.
SAN FRANCISCO — Hall of Fame football coach Bill Walsh, who built an NFL dynasty with the San Francisco 49ers and revolutionized the sport with his West Coast offense, disclosed that he has leukemia.Stanford University officials confirmed Friday that Walsh, who served as the school's interim athletic director until July, has told friends and colleagues there that he has cancer.Walsh said the cancer first was diagnosed in 2004, but he feels better since a series of blood transfusions in the past month.Walsh went 102-63-1 with the 49ers, winning three Super Bowls. He was named the NFL's coach of the year in 1981 and 1984.
