In the District 9 Class AA football playoffs, No. 2-seeded Karns City (9-1) will host No. 3 Moniteau (6-4) at 7 p.m. Nov. 18.
On Friday, Nov. 17, No. 1 Brookville (9-1) will host No. 4 Brockway (6-4) in the other semifinal game.
In District 10, Grove City and Seneca, Class AAA schools which received at-large berths, will square off at 1 p.m. Saturday at Wilmington High School.
Four area soccer teams have learned their first-round PIAA fates. The following games will be played on Tuesday:In Class AAA boys, Butler (20-2-1), the No. 3 seed out of the WPIAL, will face District 10 champion Cathedral Prep at 7 p.m. at Veterans Stadium in Erie.In Class AA girls, Freeport (17-2) will face District 10 winner Fairview (20-1-1) at 3 p.m. at Harbor Creek High School. Karns City (18-3-1), the District 9 winner, will face Seton-LaSalle (16-4) at 6 p.m. at Clarion University. That is the second game of a scheduled tripleheader.District 10 runner-up Slippery Rock (19-2) will meet WPIAL champion South Park (18-5-1) at 6 p.m. at Chartiers Valley High School.
Senior middle hitter Carlie Roberts of Grove City College has been named a All-Presidents' Athletic Conference first-team selection.Laurie Lindner, an outside hitter for Waynesburg College from Seneca Valley High School, was a second-team choice, along with GCC sophomore middle hitter Natalie Liberati and junior setter Kim Walsh.
NEW YORK — A Brazilian man stunned the favored Africans, ending their decade-long hold on the New York City Marathon Sunday.Marilson Gomes dos Santos of Brazil made a remarkable New York debut, breaking away from the lead pack in the last quarter of the race and holding off an all-star field of challengers to become the first South American to win the race, man or woman. Gomes finished in 2 hours, 9 minutes and 58 seconds.Defending champion Jelena Prokopcuka of Latvia sped away early and ran alone at the end, becoming the first woman in more than a decade to win two straight titles in New York. She won in 2:25:05.Seven-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong crossed the finish line in 2:59:36 seconds.
