Demand could double North Dakota's canola crop

BISMARCK, N.D. — Canola-producing king North Dakota could see its crop double with the increasing demand for biodiesel fuel and the recent government acknowledgment that canola oil may be good for the heart, growers say.

The Food and Drug Administration on Friday said canola oil and some foods made with it will be allowed to make the claim that the oil reduces the risk of coronary heart disease.

Barry Coleman, executive director of the Northern Canola Growers Association, said consumers will begin seeing canola listed on more product labels — from potato chips to bread. And North Dakota's will begin seeing even more golden fields of the crop in the state, he said.

Combined with the burgeoning demand for biodiesel, the FDA's announcement creates a positive "double-whammy" for the estimated 3,700 canola growers in North Dakota, he said.

The state produces about 95 percent of the nation's canola, Coleman said. Farmers in North Dakota planted 930,000 acres this year.
