IN BRIEF

NEW YORK — Amelie Mauresmo wiped raindrops from her face Tuesday and Lleyton Hewitt nearly skidded into a split as bad weather played havoc with the U.S. Open.

All 64 matches on the schedule were pushed back to today, as was a remembrance of Hurricane Katrina on the one-year anniversary. The forecast called for morning showers.

Only nine matches started, and that was after a 3Z\x-hour rain delay. None of them came close to completion.

The top-seeded Mauresmo won her opening set against unheralded Kristina Barrois 6-1, but was trailing 2-5 in the second when play was halted for a second time. About five hours later, organizers gave up on them resuming.

ATLANTA — Barry Bonds hit his 726th home run Tuesday, pulling within 29 of Hank Aaron's career record.Returning to the city where Hammerin' Hank broke Babe Ruth's mark, Bonds drove a 2-1 pitch from Atlanta's Tim Hudson over the center-field wall, the second of back-to-back homers by the San Francisco Giants in the first inning.

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Golden State Warriors have lured Don Nelson back from retirement to see if he can fix a franchise that's been broken ever since he left 11½ years ago.Coach Mike Montgomery was abruptly dismissed by the Warriors, and Nelson will be rehired for the job he held for nearly seven seasons, an NBA source told The Associated Press Tuesday.
