Ohio State sports top $100 million

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State's athletic department has surpassed $100 million in annual revenue for the first time, earning $101.5 million during the past fiscal year, The Columbus Dispatch reported today.

The university's sports program also finished the 2005-06 fiscal year that ended June 30 with a $2.9 million surplus, according to documents obtained by the newspaper.

Most of the surplus was placed into an account that will help fund construction of a women's softball stadium, a women's crew boathouse and an indoor tennis facility.

Money made by the football team helped Ohio State surpass its 2004-05 results, when the athletic department lost $920,000 on $88.8 million in revenue. Overall revenue grew 14.3 percent last year, and expenses grew 9.8 percent.
