Morneau HR lifts Twins

Justin Morneau picked a perfect time to end a long drought for the Minnesota Twins. Mike Sweeney also had good timing for the Kansas City Royals.

Morneau hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the eighth inning — becoming the first Minnesota player with 30 homers in almost two decades — to lift the Twins to a 4-3 win over the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday night.

"That was a nice moment for our baseball team," Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire said. "We had a little ceremony where we gave him the ball after the game."

At Kansas City, Mike Sweeney hit an RBI single with two outs in the ninth, capping a two-run rally against rookie closer Jonathan Papelbon that carried the Royals to a 5-4 victory over the Boston Red Sox.

Sweeney, a five-time All-Star, came off the 60-day disabled list Tuesday after missing 88 games with a bulging disc in his back.

"I read the stats and I saw Jonathan's ERA was 0.64 and I knew he wasn't going to walk many guys, so I just told myself to get a good pitch," Sweeney said. "I was looking for the hard stuff."

Gary Gaetti, Tom Brunansky and Kent Hrbek were the last Twins to hit 30 homers — all in 1987 — and Morneau became the first Minnesota player with 30 home runs and 100 RBIs since Gaetti.

Manny Ramirez homered to extend his career-best hitting streak to 24 games, and Javy Lopez added a two-run double for Boston on a 102-degree night. But Papelbon (3-2) failed to hold a 4-3 lead in the ninth, costing Josh Beckett his 14th win and leaving the Red Sox with a four-game losing streak.

Randy Johnson pitched six innings of no-hit ball and New York hit three homers off Jon Garland to end his eight-game winning streak.

Jake Westbrook pitched his second shutout this season to lead the Indians.Mariners 2, Devil Rays 0At Seattle, Jarrod Washburn didn't allow a hit until Ben Zobrist's bunt single leading off the sixth, and Adrian Beltre homered to help the Mariners complete a three-game sweep.

Mark DeRosa hit three-run homers in consecutive innings, Carlos Lee scored four runs and went 4-for-5 with his first homer for Texas, and the Rangers stopped Oakland's six-game winning streak.

At Toronto, Roy Halladay (14-3) allowed three runs and eight hits in 7 1-3 innings to tie Boston's Curt Schilling and Detroit's Justin Verlander for the major league lead in victories.
