WORLD CUP GLANCE

BERLIN — A look at Day 23 of the 2006 World Cup:

RESULTSPortugal 0, England 0 (Portugal wins shootout 3-1, advances to semifinals)France 1, Brazil 0 (France advances to semifinals)

HIGHLIGHTSRicardo Pereira saved three penalty kicks in a shootout and Simao Sabrosa, Helder Postiga and Cristiano Ronaldo scored as Portugal advanced to the semifinals. Ricardo foiled Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard, then made another big save on Jamie Carragher, deflecting his shot off the crossbar and out.Zinedine Zidane served a perfect free kick to Thierry Henry in the 57th minute. Completely unmarked at the far post, Henry had the whole right side of the net and put in a volley with his right instep.

STARSScore another one for the old master. Zinedine Zidane, who turned 34 last week and is retiring after the World Cup, was brilliant, showing all of the skills that made him a three-time world player of the year. He kept the five-time champions off-balance all night with his technique and ball control, and players 10 years younger were no match.Another good night in goal. Ricardo Pereira saved three penalty kicks against England, and France's Fabien Barthez smothered several shots late to stun Brazil.

GOAL OF THE DAYThierry Henry scored the winner for France in the 57th minute, getting to the end of Zinedine Zidane's free kick and eliminating defending champion Brazil. After Cafu fouled Florent Malouda to set up the free kick 30 yards out on the left wing, Zidane curled his free kick over the crowd in front of the net to Henry, who ran in unmarked at the back post and volleyed the ball into the roof of the net.

LOOKAHEADHost Germany plays Italy in Dortmund on Tuesday. The teams met in the 1982 World Cup final, which the Azzurri won 3-1. Germany, a three-time champion, is unbeaten and seems to be gaining confidence with each victory. Luca Toni finally got back on track with a pair of goals in the quarterfinals and the Azzurri defense has been spectacular. But it will take a special effort to beat the Germans.Portugal plays France in Munich on Wednesday in a matchup few would have predicted when the tournament began. Portugal has yet to lose a game, finding a way to advance Saturday even though Deco and Costinha were suspended. But with Zinedine Zidane playing like the Zizou of old, France could be on a magical run like 1998.
