Geisler survives wild Late Model race

Spring drivers Brent Matus (33) and Brian Ellenberger head into Turn 3 during racing action at Lernerville Speedway Friday.

BUFFALO TWP— Lynn Geisler claimed his 105th career Lernerville Speedway Late Model feature win Friday night.

And it may have been his wackiest.

"This one ranks right up there,"the veteran driver of the No. 1Cfrom Cranberry Township admitted.

Geisler grabbed the lead from pole-sitter Bob Wearing Jr. of Renfrew on the eighth lap and was headed for victory around Turn 3 of the final lap when Greg Satterlee, who had been running second, spun out on Turn 2.

Satterlee's misfortune moved Alex Ferree of Saxonburg into the second position for a two-lap restart. Ferree and Geisler brushed together in the front straightaway during the restart and Ferree jumped into the lead.

"That was nothing,"Geisler said of the contact. "That's just part of the game."

Ferree had a comfortable lead on the back straightaway of the final lap, but had his certain win taken away by Ron Delano's spin-out on Turn 4.

The next two-lap restart wasn't as kind to Ferree, who suffered a flat rear right tire and faded to seventh.

"The car got tight and there was a hole in the tire,"Ferree said. "I can't totally blame on that. I had a bad restart to begin with."

Geisler still didn't have a clear win as Dutch Davies rocketed off Turn 4 of the final lap and pulled alongside him. Geisler nipped him by a fender to grab the checkered flag. Davies started the race from the sixth spot.

"That was Dutch doing what he needed to do,"Geisler said "My hat's off to him for that move. Dutch and I have raced together before. I know what he's about."

He knows what yellow flags are all about, too.

"You never know when they're coming, but you know they're coming,"Geisler said. "All kinds of things change during the course of a race. It may look like one thing here, then it looks like something else there."

While the yellow flags helped guide Geisler to a strange win, Sprint driver Scott Bonnell was happy to see red.

The Fairview driver of the No. 3Bled the Sprint feature from start to finish after beginning the race in the first row. But lapped traffic was giving him trouble with two laps remaining and Sarver's Carl Bowser was in position to take the lead.

"Scott wasn't bobbling or anything; the lapped cars just weren't going his way,"Bowser said. "I was in position to take him."

Before he could, J.W. Tush flipped his No. 92 car off Turn 3 and Cory Good rolled his car over on Turn 4, prompting the red light.

Neither Tush nor Good were hurt, but the damage was done to Bowser's chance of reaching victory lane for the first time.

"Once that restart happened, I knew Scott was going to run away from me on an open track,"Bowser said.

Bonnell's win was his first of the season anywhere and his second career Lernerville feature triumph. He won his first feature here last year.

"Carl had a chance (before the red), I could hear him coming alongside of me,"Bonnell said. "I was going to stay up high and roll the dice."

Dave Murdick of Slippery Rock started the Modified feature from the third position, but he took the lead from Joe Crawford on the second lap and never lost it.

Murdick, last year's track champion, built a straightaway lead midway through the race and easily held off fellow Modified veterans Kevin Bolland and Brian Swartzlander for the win.

The win was Murdick's second of the season here. He did not compete in Wednesday's 100-lap Keystone Klassic because he couldn't get his new car set up in time.

"I didn't think this old car was good enough to run in that race,"Murdick said. "Maybe I should have showed up."

Jason Fosnaught of Creighton won his first career Pure Stock feature at Lernerville, taking the lead on the second lap after three first-lap restarts took out two pole-sitters:Fosnaught's brother, Jim, and Pat Hanley.

Fosnaught held off Greg Beach and defending track champion Butch Lambert for the win as both drivers stayed on his tail for the final three laps after a restart.

Fosnaught took a victory lap with the checkered flag after winning the race. He pulled into victory lane, climbed onto the roof of his car and let out a yell.

"This feels so good because we've been so close all year,"he said.

Notes: There were 95 cars in the pits. ... The Pure Stock race teams of Mike Pegher and Harold Reges have been suspended for two weeks by Lernerville track officials after a scuffle in the pit area last week. Seneca Valley graduate Pegher had trailed Lambert by 18 in the points standings. ... Gary Rankin of Renfrew won his first Sprint heat race this year. ... The MACSLate Models and All-Star Sprints run here next Friday. Time trials are at 7 p.m., racing at 8.
