Moraine to host pro flying disc competition
The 2006 Ameriprise Financial Pittsburgh Flying Disc Open comes to Moraine State Park this weekend.
This professional Frisbee golf event is one of 15 tournaments on the National Pro Disc Golf Association Tour.
An 18-hole course will be laid out on the North Shore at Moraine, beginning and ending at the parking lot near the public swimming area.
"These holes may range anywhere from 600 feet to 900 feet in distance," tournament co-director Keith Clark said. "The object is to sail your disk into a basket hanging on a pole.
"A chain will be above each basket, so competitors may choose to bank their shots in, like a backboard is used in basketball."
This event consists of two divisions, professional and amateur. The pros will play 18 holes from the white tees beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, then play another 18 holes from the gold tees — 200 to 300 yards farther back — at 2 p.m.
The amateurs will play at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday at Knob Hill Community Park in Marshall Township.
The pros and amateurs will switch sites and play at the same times Sunday.
This event will feature more than 100 players from 10 states and Canada.
The tournament is open to the public at no charge. Male pros had to pay a $97 entry fee while female pros paid an $82 entry fee. Amateur entry fees ranged from $30 to $57.
The Moraine Summer Safar, an amateur flying disc golf event in the Steel City Championship Series, will be held at Moraine at 9 a.m. July 1.
