Big week for a Sprinter

Schaeffer gains son, race win over Lynch

BUFFALOTWP — Kevin Schaeffer made two additions to his life this week. Both will wind up in the same place.

Wednesday afternoon, Schaeffer's wife, Brandy, gave birth to the couple's first child,Elliott Matthew, who was named for Bill Elliott, his father's favorite Nextel Cup driver.

Friday night, Schaeffer won his ninth career Lernerville Speedway Sprint feature — and first this season — by holding off the track's all-time Sprint feature victory leader, Ed Lynch Jr.

"This trophy is going in the baby's room,"the veteran driver from Kittanning said. "I will never forget this week. It has to be the best week we've ever had."

Schaeffer began the race from the eighth position, but passed leader Carl Bowser of Sarver on the second turn of the seventh lap.

He had a wide lead on Lynch, who started 11th and took over second place on the 14th lap, when Rod George caused a caution by getting a flat tire on Turn 1 of the 15th lap.

Lynch threatened to overtake Schaeffer on Turn 2 a couple of times thereafter, but never did.

"I had a few moves in mind, but never got close enough to him to pull them off,"Lynch said.

Throughout the race, Schaeffer came through Turn 1 on the low groove before sliding up high on the back straightaway. On the final lap, with Lynch bearing down, Schaeffer was forced to go into Turn 2 high because of lapped traffic.

The move cut off Lynch, who barely missed ramming into Schaeffer's No. 9 car.

"I had no choice,"Schaeffer said. "Lapped cars were down low and I had to get around them. Besides, I heard Ed's car coming around and he couldn't pass me if I got in front of him."

"That's the way racing goes sometimes,"Lynch said. "It was a good move on his part, one he had to make."

In other Fab Four action at Lernerville, David Scott of Garland won his first Late Model feature of the season here, taking the lead from Matt Lux on Lap 6 and keeping it against a determined Gary Lyle.

Nick Reges of Butler won his first Pure Stock feature at Lernerville and Kevin Bolland of New Brighton led from wire to wire in the Modified feature.

Lyle, Lernerville's Late Model points champion in 1998, has struggled to reach victory lane in recent years. He nearly got there Friday.

"I almost got him there (in the last lap),"Lyle said. "I needed a stronger push out of Turn 1 than I was getting, because I was strong coming off Turn 2.

"If I had gotten a bit closer to him off Turn 1, I think I would have taken him."

Scott agreed.

"He almost got this thing done,"Scott said. "I mean, he was right there."

Scott's win was his 15th at Lernerville overall, but his first since August of last year.

"We junked a car here on opening night, we tore one up the second night. ... We just haven't caught a break here,"Scott said.

Reges' No. 38 car got together with race-leader Mike Pegher Jr. on Turn 1 of the eighth lap in the Pure Stock feature, and Pegher nearly spun out. He regained control, but slipped to fourth.

On the fourth turn of the same lap, Pegher got tangled with Wayne Carbo's No. 54 and had to tail the field for the restart. Reges got the lead on the ninth lap and maintained it to the checkered flag.

Bolland's win was his 33rd in the Modified division at Lernerville. That win total ties him with Jack Sodeman for 16th on the Sarver track's overall all-time victory list.

Bolland said the race was a tune-up for this Wednesday's Keystone Klassic, a 100-lap Modified feature at Lernerville.

"This car was dialed in for 100 laps tonight and I think it might have stood a good chance,"Bolland said. "I'm looking to be holding this same (checkered) flag Wednesday night."

Notes: There were 93 cars in the pits. ... Scott Priester of Rimersburg flipped his Sprint car on the back straightaway during his heat race, but he returned for the feature and finished 10th. ... Carl McKinney of Cranberry Township won his second career Late Model heat race, but was involved in a four-car pile-up during the feature and was towed off. ... Ken Schaltenbrand started 23rd in the Late Model feature, but finished third. ... Time trials for Wednesday's Modified SuperDIRTSeries begin at 7 p.m. Late Models are also on the card.
