Borrowed time

Sprint car driver Dean Jacobs stays ahead of Tim Shaffer as Jacobs went on to capture the World of Outlaws Commonwealth Clash Wednesday night at Lernerville Speedway.

BUFFALO TWP— Dean Jacobs had borrowed Terry McCarl's car before.

Wednesday night at Lernerville Speedway, he borrowed it for the joy ride of his life.

The veteran Sprint car driver from Wooster, Ohio, driving the No. 24 Sprint car for the injured McCarl, won the 35-lap World of Outlaws Commonwealth Clash.

It was Jacobs' fourth career feature win at Lernerville. It was his first World of Outlaws feature triumph.

"Terry's a good friend of mine and he gave me the opportunity to sit in the fastest race car I've ever been in,"Jacobs said. "To win a World of Outlaws race, that's just awesome."

McCarl suffered a broken left tibia at the conclusion of the May 20 Outlaws feature at Sharon Speedway when his car had a driveline component failure.

Sidelined for up to six weeks and sitting third in the points race at the time of the accident, McCarl has asked Jacobs to race his car three times since.

The third time proved to be the charm Wednesday night. Starting from the fourth position, Jacobs took the lead on the fourth turn of the first lap and never lost it.

The feature had restarts on the third and 10th laps, but none thereafter.

"This car runs so well,"Jacobs said. "Once I got out in the open, all I had to do was keep running it."

Jacobs breezed through lapped traffic. The real race proved to be for second place, which pole-sitter Jason Solwold won by nipping Donny Schatz at the finish line.

Schatz, the Outlaws' points leader, started from the 18th position.

"If the race was 40 laps or we got a yellow flag in there somewhere, it might have been different,"Schatz said. "You need breaks like that when you start 18th.

"I put myself in that position by not performing well earlier tonight. To stay consistent in this series, you have to earn starts near the front."

Solwold wasn't sure if he had anything for Jacobs had there been more restarts in the race.

"He looked pretty good once he shot out there in front,"Solwold said. "I was more worried about where (Schatz)was. I kept trying to find him and suddenly he was right behind me.

"It seemed like he was passing five cars at a time."

But he couldn't pass the one that counted.

"This win couldn't have come at a better race track as far as I'm concerned,"Jacobs said. "I've spent a lot of time here. I love this place.

"I know Terry's happy. We called him right after the race. But I also know he'd rather be standing in victory lane instead of me."

Ed Lynch Jr. of Apollo was the highest finisher among area drivers, claiming ninth place. Lynch won the B-Main after finishing sixth in his heat race.

The top five heat race finishers gained automatic berths in the feature.

Area drivers Arnie Kent and Scott Bonnell finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the first heat race. They finished 25th and 22nd in the feature.

Rob Chaney of Wooster, Ohio, driving for Randy Hannagan, had the fastest qualifying time of 12.233 seconds, setting a track record for fastest lap. His speed for that lap was 122.421 miles per hour.

Joey Saldana held the previous track record of 12.334 seconds, set in May 2002.

Wayne Carbo of Saxonburg led from start to finish in the Pure Stock feature to capture his second victory of the season at the Sarver track. Defending points champion Butch Lambert of Mars finished second.
