Butler Cubs ASAwill present an amateur boxing card Saturday night in its gym at 113 S. McKean St.

The event, dubbed Fight Night at the Cubs,features 10 three-round amateur fights.

"What's good about this type of boxing is that everyone is evenly matched,"said Don Spinetti, the Cubs' boxing director. "The biggest misnomer parents have about boxing is that their kids are too small.

"Nobody is too big or too small for amateur boxing."

Saturday's fight card begins at 7:30 p.m. and admission is $12. This show marks the 21st fight card held at the Butler Cubs in 23 years.

Ryan Covert (30-8) is the most experienced fighter on the card. He will oppose Aaron Strader of Wilkinsburg.

"Ryan's been with us for quite a while and he's thinking of turning pro,"Spinetti said. "I don't recommend that anybody turn pro.

"There's 1,100 professional heavyweight boxers in the world. Maybe 15 or 20 of them make serious money. The rest of them are club fighters.

"Brian (Minto)will make his money, but he's the exception, not the rule,"Spinetti said.

Minto, 24-1 as a pro, got his start in boxing with the Cubs program.

"Our program keeps kids busy and off the streets,"Spinetti said. "It instills discipline in them, keeps them in shape and instills confidence in them. That's what parents like about it."

• Seth Bartmas (8-3) vs. Jason Redfield (Findlay Twp.), 135 pounds

• Ryan Covert (30-8) vs. Aaron Strader (Wilkinsburg), 178 pounds

• Travis Zaborowski (0-1) vs. Alex Rodriguez (Erie), 112 pounds

• Jason Erdos (1-2) vs. Dulon Carroll (Altoona), heavyweight

• Dave Cook (4-3) vs. Jonathan Billings (Carrick), 165 pounds

• Devin Parker (0-0) vs. unknown opponent, 180 pounds

All fighters will be wearing protective headgear.

The Butler Cubs program is one of 33 boxing clubs comprising the Allegheny Mountain Association.
