Moniteau graduate Natalie DeMatteis, a freshman shortstop on the Mercyhurst North East College women's softball team, has gained a spot on the 2006 National Fast-Pitch Coaches Association All-East Region team.
DeMatteis batted .535 this season — ranking eighth in the nation — and hit 16 doubles. She had 35 RBIand struck out only twice in 114 at-bats.
DeMatteis is now eligible for the NFCAAll-American team, which will be announced in early June.
Butler boys lacrosse junior midfielder Dan McPherson was one of 13 players to receive Western Pennsylvania Scholastic Lacrosse Association Division II North all-conference honors.Two of McPherson's teammates, sophomore attacker Zach Reiser and sophomore midfielder Chris Blakely, were chosen to play in the WPSLA All-Star Game June 3 at a site to be determined.Also playing in the game will be Seneca Valley senior midfielder Shawn Cross and senior defender Mike Johnson.
SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University women's swimming standout Jen Zuzack recently received ESPNThe Magazine Academic All-District 2 At-Large first-team honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America.A physical therapy major, Zuzack maintained a 4.0 gradepoint average throughout her undergraduate career and sustained that level of exccellence in her first year of graduate school.
EMPORIA, Kan. — Slippery Rock University freshman Jeff Weiss finished fourth in the men's 10,000-meter run Thursday at the NCAADivision IIOutdoor Track and Field Championships.His time of 30 minutes, 26.59 seconds was his second fastest of the season. His fourth-place finish earns him all-America honors.Weiss also was an all-American in cross country last fall, finishing third in the national meet.Butler graduate Jill Rekich didn't reach the finals in either the 400-meter hurdles or the 400-meter relay at this weekend's national meet.
BUFFALO TWP — The Fab Four racing show, scheduled Friday night for Lernerville Speedway, was canceled by rain.The World of Outlaws Sprint Commonwealth Clash, along with Pure Stocks, will run Wednesday at the track. Time trials for the Sprint cars are 7:15 p.m., racing starts at 8.
