Tell mother she's special Sunday with tissue angel

Today, Julia Ward Howe (1819-1910) is considered to be one of the country's first feminists.

In 1878, Congress defeated the issue to give women equal treatment under the law. Howe, and women like her, made sure the legislation was reintroduced in every session of Congress for the next 40 years before it was passed as the 19th Amendment guaranteeing women the right to vote.

Howe is also credited as the first person in America to suggest the idea that mothers deserve a special day of recognition. True to form, Congress spent the next 42 years debating the issue before it made Mother's Day an official national observance.

Tell your mom she's an angel this Mother's Day with tissue angels. You'll find this at www.crayola.com on the Web.

Supplies you will need are:

4 One box of facial tissues

Washable watercolors

Yarn

One gold pipe cleaner

Markers

Glue

Bowl

Water

Scissors

Paper towels

Twist ties

Put a small amount of water in a bowl and add drops of one color of washable watercolors. Dip a tissue into the water. Gently open the tissue and lay it on a paper towel to dry.

To make the robe, lay the colored tissue on top of two white tissues, gather at the centers and tie at the middle. To form the wings, lay two tissues on top of each other, gather them together like a bow and tie. Attach the skirt to the back of the wings.

Roll a tissue into a tight ball and cover it with another tissue for the angel's head and apron. Tie under the ball and attach to the front of the wings and robe.

Use yarn for hair and make a pipe cleaner into a halo. Glue.

Use fine markers for the face and to decorate the apron.
