Mighty Ducks stun Calgary, 3-0

CALGARY, Alberta — The best of the NHL West are all on a long rest.

Rookie goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 22 shots Wednesday night and the Anaheim Mighty Ducks beat the Calgary Flames 3-0 in Game 7.

The sixth-seeded Mighty Ducks' win meant the top four seeds in the Western Conference — Detroit, Dallas, Calgary and Nashville — were all eliminated in the first round.

The Ducks will face seventh-seeded Colorado in the second round of the playoffs, with the first game Friday night at Anaheim. Eighth-seeded Edmonton plays fifth-seeded San Jose in the other conference semifinal.

Teemu Selanne and Ruslan Salei scored in the second period for Anaheim, while Jeff Friesen added an empty-net goal in the final minute of the game.

"It seemed like we had more energy tonight," Anaheim coach Randy Carlyle said. "We knew that the first 10 minutes would be critical. For us to get through that first period was monumental for us."

Bryzgalov was the most prominent of the six rookies Anaheim used Wednesday night.

"We played a pretty complete game and I thought Bryz was really unbelievable," Salei said. "These are the games you have to prove to yourself and everybody else, and the whole world was watching."

The Flames have lost the last four Game 7s played in Calgary, the most recent in 1995.

"When you set your goals for the year and you accomplish everything you did to get Game 1 and Game 7, to win Game 1 and lose Game 7 is tough," Flames coach Darryl Sutter said. "I think that we ran out of gas."
