Earl Woods, who was more determined to raise a good son than a great golfer and became the architect and driving force behind Tiger Woods' phenomenal career, died at his home in Cypress, Calif. He was 74.

A habitual smoker who had heart bypass surgery in 1986, Woods was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1998 and was treated with radiation. But the cancer returned in 2004 and spread throughout his body.

MILWAUKEE — Barry Bonds was dazed after being hit by a ball during batting practice before the San Francisco Giants' game against the Brewers.Bonds was leaning against the batting cage when a ball hit by Giants infielder Kevin Frandsen was caught by netting covering the batting cage, then struck Bonds in the forehead.Bonds appeared to be stunned immediately after being struck, then laid down on the ground for several minutes while being attended to by the team's medical staff. He then took his regular turn in the batting cage.He remained in the lineup.

MINNEAPOLIS — The Minnesota Vikings fired personnel director Fran Foley, who plans to sue the franchise and have an arbitration hearing before NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Brother Derek was installed as the 3-1 favorite at the Kentucky Derby after drawing the No. 18 post position. Only one horse has ever won the Derby from that spot — Gato Del Sol in 1982.
