Chris Tolliver smacked three home runs with five hits and seven RBI overall as the Slippery Rock University baseball team swept a doubleheader from host Clarion 8-2 and 18-4 in PSAC-West Action Saturday.

Tolliver was 3-for-6 with two home runs in the first game in 11 innings and 2-for-5 with a homer and three RBI in the nightcap.

SRU (25-11, 11-1) had swept Clarion 4-0 and 14-2 at Critchfield Park on Friday.

The wins virtually assured SRU a berth in the six-team PSACplayoffs May 4-6 in Boalsburg. One more win by SRU or a loss by Indiana (Pa.) will clinch a spot.

In the 11th inning of the first game, Ryan Dillon and Tolliver each had three-run homers to break the game open. Tom Turnbull pitched 4 2/3 of scoreless, two-hit relief to pick up the win.

Tolliver's second three-run homer of the day, along a Dillon RBI double, a run-scoring single by Dave Gonos and a sacrifice fly by Grove City High graduate Billy Herman highlighted a seven-run fifth inning in Game 2.

Colin Scott picked up the complete-game victory, which included six strikeouts.

J.D. Lowry went 5-for-5 to lead a 25-hit attack. Todd Schickling went 4-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI, Gonos was 4-for-5 with a double and three RBI, Dillon 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI and Herman added three hits and an RBI.

Softball

The SRU squad dropped a doubleheader to No. 7-ranked Lock Haven 3-0 and 16-0 in five innings of a Saturday twinbill.

The Rock had only two hits in the first game, singles by Meghan McHenry and Laura Campbell. Rock pitcher Jenna Frieling tossed a complete gamewith five strikeouts to take the loss.

In Game 2, Lock Haven had 17 hits, eight being extra-base hits, while the pitching duo of Jeannette Middlestead and Stephanie Kinch combined for a no-hitter and allowed just one walk to Stacey Rhoades.
