ZELIENOPLE — With an aging population that will soon need its services, Passavant Retirement Community is expanding into the remaining undeveloped four acres left on its 42-acre site.

In September 2005, Passavant began a $10 million expansion that includes the construction of 18 villas and 24 apartments, said Ann Mutmansky, a Passavant spokeswoman.

The villas and apartments will be bigger than any other living spaces on the campus, ranging from 1,325 square feet to 1,650 square feet. They will have two bedrooms, two bathrooms, private garages and more common space, such as living and dining rooms, she said.

The first residents to live in the new structures will move there in June, she said. The total project is slated to be complete in 2008.

Mutmansky said the expansion plans for aging baby boomers.

"We have them squarely in the midst of our strategic planning," she said in October.

Residences, including apartments and cottages, make up about 75 percent of Passavant's property. The other 25 percent of the campus includes a nursing center, parking, administrative offices and assisted living center, said Mutmansky.

The expansion project came as Passavant celebrates its 100th year in 2005. The project has been in the works for three years.
