BRADENTON, Fla. — Ray Sadler, an outfielder hitting .364 this spring, was one of five non-roster players reassigned Sunday to the Pittsburgh Pirates' minor-league camp.

Also sent down were infielder J.J. Furmaniak, right-hander Marty McLeary, catcher Paul Chiaffredo and right-hander Jorge Vasquez. The moves leave 35 players in camp, not including injured pitchers Kip Wells, Bryan Bullington and John Van Benschoten, all of whom will start the season on the disabled list.

The Pirates must cut 10 more players by next Sunday, a day before their season-opening game in Milwaukee.

HOMESTEAD, Fla. — Driver Paul Dana died after a two-car crash Sunday during the warmup for the season-opening IRL IndyCar Series race at Homestead-Miami Speedway.While streaking around the oval during a warmup session, Dana failed to notice that the car of Ed Carpenter had spun to a stop, slamming into it at close to 200 mph.Both drivers were flown by helicopter to a Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, where Dana was pronounced dead about two hours after the 10:03 a.m. crash.

CALGARY, Alberta — America has a world champion — Kimmie Meissner, not Sasha Cohen.Following the tradition of teenage American women pulling off big upsets, the 16-year-old Meissner used the performance of her life Saturday to soar to the World Figure Skating Championships title.U.S. champion Cohen fell apart again in a free skate, winding up third overall behind Japan's Fumie Suguri.
