PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. — David Toms shot his second straight 67 and had a one-stroke lead on Billy Mayfair Friday after two rounds of the Honda Classic.
Toms, at 10-under 134, made six birdies on the front nine, including a run of four straight for the second day in a row.
Mayfair shot a bogey-free round of 67, with four birdies in his final five holes.
Defending champion Padraig Harrington (67), Daniel Chopra (65), Mathias Gronberg (71) and Geoff Ogilvy (71) are all four strokes back of Toms.
HUIXQUILUCAN, Mexico — Annika Sorenstam shot a 5-under 67 Friday in her first competitive round of the year to finish tied for the lead with Italy's Silvia Cavalleri in the MasterCard Classic.Sorenstam, who sat out the first two tournaments of the season in Hawaii last month, also made her 2005 debut here, winning the 54-hole event outside of Mexico City.Norway's Suzann Pettersen was in third place after the opening round, at 4-under.
PHOENIX — Suns coach Mike D'Antoni was put in charge of the team's basketball operations Friday following the departure of Bryan Colangelo to the Toronto Raptors.In addition to coaching D'Antoni will become executive vice president of basketball operations and general manager.D'Antoni's overall record is 125-78, and he was named coach of the year after his team won an NBA-best 62 games last season.
ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Rams agreed to a three-year, $15 million deal with Isaac Bruce Friday, five days after releasing him.The Rams' longest-tenured player, Bruce is the team's career leader in receptions (813), yards receiving (12,278) and receiving touchdowns (77). He also caught the game-winning touchdown pass in the Rams' lone Super Bowl victory after the 2000 season.
CALGARY, Alberta — Olympic silver medalists Sasha Cohen, Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto head the U.S. team selected for this month's World Figure Skating Championships.Joining Cohen in Calgary on March 20 through 25 will be Kimmie Meissner, who was sixth in Turin, and Emily Hughes, who finished seventh at the Olympics.Belbin and Agosto ended a 30-year medal drought for U.S. ice dancers with their silver in Turin.
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Florida State's Walter Dix won the men's 200 final at the NCAA Indoor track and field championships Friday, beating LSU teammates Xavier Carter and Kelly Willie.Dix finished in 20.27, the world's top time in 2006, to become the second Seminoles winner on the meet's first day.Rhodes Scholar Garrett Johnson, a Florida State junior, won the shot put with a throw of 67 feet, 2Qr inches.
