SRU wrestlers claim East Regional title
Slippery Rock University captured the NCAA Division I East Regional wrestling team championship Saturday at Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, N.C.
The Rock finished with 100.5 points to outdistance Gardner-Webb (67), Duquesne (65), Millersville (43) and Delaware State (7).
Chris Clarke (125 pounds), Jason Cardillo (165), Charlie Pienaar (184) and Matt Burkholder (heavyweight) all won weight class titles.
David Pienaar (141) was selected by the participating coaches as the lone wild-card berth. He will join the other four champions at the NCAA national tournament March 16-19 in Oklahoma City, Okla.
The Rock sent a regional-tournament record 10 wrestlers (the maximum possible). The four champions ties a school record a set in 1996 and tied in 2004 for SRU, while the five qualifiers is the most in school history.
In the semifinal round of the Region XX Championships in Frederick, Md., the Butler County Community College men's basketball team fell to Montgomery-Rockville (Md.) 72-62 Friday.Matt Lobaugh had 22 points, Ed Beasley 11 points and Butler graduate Joel Rehm added 10 points, seven rebounds and six assists.The Pioneers (17-13) posted their second consecutive winning campaign.
