Americans ready to bid wild 'arrivederci' to Italy

TURIN, Italy — By Sunday, the U.S. medal count will be pretty much sealed. The only thing left for the American delegation will be a wild, somewhat-weird goodbye party.

The final day of the Turin Olympics features only two events and Americans won't be a factor in either. Instead, members of the U.S. team who have remained in Italy can sleep late, then take part in a closing ceremony even the director describes as "peculiar."

Daniele Finzi Pasca also promises it will be "full of art, melodrama and circus acrobats." Performers will show off all sorts of costumes and masks. So will the audience, with attendees getting paper red noses and other face-coverings.

"The aim is to have a big party that all will enjoy," he said.

Technically, the theme is "Carnevale," because it coincides with the Italian festival of the same name that happens this time every year. There also will some twists and tributes to influential film director Federico Fellini.

Catering to all interests, organizers are bringing in an eclectic mix of singers: Latin pop artist Ricky Martin, Canadian rocker Avril Lavigne and Italian opera singer Andrea Bocelli.

Lavigne will be part of the handoff ceremony for the hosts of the next Winter Games, Vancouver. A highlight of the transfer will be IOC president Jacques Rogge giving the Olympic flag to Vancouver Mayor Sam Sullivan, a quadriplegic who will dart around the stage in his wheelchair, the banner flapping behind him.

Speedskater Joey Cheek will carry the U.S. flag, an honor he received in a vote from his teammates. It's a reward for the gold and silver medals he won and for his decision to donate his $40,000 in Olympic bonuses to charity.

The party can't start until the work is finished. And there are two medals still to be decided: the men's 50K cross-country race and the men's hockey final.

Carl Swenson is the best U.S. hope in cross-country, but he's ill and may not enter — and isn't expected to be near the front of the pack even if he does. The team didn't have to decide its competitors until Saturday afternoon.

The game between Sweden and Finland will decide the 84th and last gold medal of the 20th Winter Games. The U.S. team will have long since returned home, getting ready for the resumption of the NHL season on Tuesday.

NBC will show the hockey game live, starting at 8 a.m. EST. The cross-country race will be shown in the afternoon, with the closing ceremony getting the prime-time treatment.

USA will show two hours of figure skating highlights from all four disciplines.
