The buses were set on fire by angry mobs during a protest against the publication of cartoons depicting the Islamic prophet Muhammad. More than 70,000 people flooded the city streets and went on a rampage, torching businesses and fighting police. A KFC restaurant, three movie theaters and the offices of the country’s main mobile phone company were also burned.
