WASHINGTON — West Virginia does know how to play man-to-man defense. Now there's an entire half of game tape to prove it.

Coach John Beilein switched from his usual 1-3-1 zone at halftime Sunday night and had his players go mano-a-mano with Georgetown. The No. 9 Mountaineers dominated the second half and pulled away for a 69-56 victory over the 15th-ranked Hoyas.

"They killed the zone. They were incredible. They tossed it around like crazy," Beilein said. "I thought our man was good. We work on it a lot, but we don't play it as much as other teams do."

The Hoyas, who led by as many as 11 in the first half, scored only 19 points in the second. Jeff Green scored all but five. Green went 6-for-10 from the field in the half, while his teammates went 2-for-23.

"I don't think I've seen a game where they've gotten out of the zone the whole second half," Georgetown coach John Thompson III said.

West Virginia's Kevin Pittsnogle, who was held scoreless in a 57-53 loss Thursday at Pittsburgh, had 25 points on 10-for-15 shooting and scored six of the first eight points in a 15-5 game-ending run. The victory snapped Georgetown's seven-game winning streak and moved the Mountaineers (18-5, 9-1 Big East) into a first-place tie with Connecticut and Villanova.

Pittsnogle was playing his third game since his wife, Heather, gave birth to the couple's first child Feb. 3.

"He had bounce in his step," Beilein said. "He had a tough week last week. He had a lot of sleepless nights during Heather's pregnancy. He may have been pressing too hard. We had a little talk and just said, `Kevin, you're better when you let things come to you.' And he did that today."

Mike Gansey and Johannes Herber added 13 points apiece for the Mountaineers, who shot 62 percent in the second half.

Green finished with 21 points, and Brandon Bowman scored 13 of his 15 points in the first half for the Hoyas (17-5, 8-3), who were trying to beat a Top 10 team for the third time this season.

Pittsnogle went 0-for-12 against Pittsburgh and missed his first two shots against the Hoyas, but he hit a pair of jumpers and Gansey made a 3-pointer to give the Mountaineers a 20-13 lead. The Hoyas came back with three 3-pointers in a 15-0 run against the zone on the way to a 37-29 halftime lead.

But Georgetown went 0-for-6 to open the second half, and West Virginia took the lead with runs of 10-0 and 8-0. Green's dunk cut the Mountaineers' lead to 54-51 with 6:01 to play, but Georgetown didn't score again until the final minute.

"We got some open looks from our guys who are good shooters that didn't go in," Thompson said. "Then we got into a stretch where we keep taking 3s instead of going to the basket. The ball didn't bounce our way tonight."

At Columbus, Ohio, Jamar Butler scored 22 points, and Terence Dials had 19 points and 16 rebounds to lead Ohio State.Je'Kel Foster scored 18 points for the Buckeyes (18-3, 7-3), who made 13 of 23 3-pointers.Dee Brown scored 12 points for Illinois (20-4, 6-4).

At Atlanta, reserve Zam Fredrick scored a career-high 22 points and Georgia Tech ended an eight-game losing streak.Fredrick's 3-pointer with 3:22 left gave Tech (10-12, 3-8 Atlantic Coast Conference) a 67-62 lead.Ilian Evtimov led N. C. State (19-5, 8-3) with 17 points.

At Coral Gables, Fla., Tyler Hansbrough scored 25 points and Bobby Frasor added 13 for North Carolina (15-6, 6-4 Atlantic Coast Conference).Guillermo Diaz had 21 points for Miami (14-10, 6-5).
