Stephanie O'Toole, a fifth-grader from Center Township, won five gold medals at the U.S. Swimming Meet held at Shaler Middle School recently.

O'Toole, 11, swimming in the senior division, won the 100 backstroke with a time of 1 minute, 17.56 seconds, the 400 individual medley (5:12.47), the 100 butterfly (1:10.67), the 50 freestyle (27.63) and the 200 backstroke (2:26.59).

O'Toole will next compete in the Senior Championships at Fox Chapel Saturday and Sunday.

The Prospect Boys and Girls Club under-12 soccer team routed the Mars Maniacs 11-1 recently.Levi Leonberg scored three goals.C.A. Thomas, Cole McCandless, Evan Mysliewic, Kyle Hinchberger, Shane Fichter and Danielle Wissinger also scored goals for Prospect.

Butler High School graduate Kim Nowakowski continued her dominance for the California (Pa.) University women's basketball team, posting her 11th double-double of the season in the Vulcans' 67-46 win over Lock Haven Saturday.Nowakowski, a sophomore forward for Cal (17-4, 6-0 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-West), scored 14 points and also had 12 assists.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Rookie J.B. Holmes gained five shots on his nearest competitor on the 15th hole and walked away with a seven-stroke victory in his FBR Open, only his fourth tournament since joining the PGA Tour.The 23-year-old Holmes is the fastest to win $1 million on the tour in PGA Tour history. It took Retief Goosen five tournaments to reach $1 million in 2001.

GOLD COAST, Australia — South Korean teen Amy Yang became the first amateur to win a major women's professional golf tournament in Australia, beating American Catherine Cartwright in a playoff in the ANZ Australian Ladies.

TOKYO — Martina Hingis had no answer for ninth-ranked Elena Dementieva's big serves and returns, falling 6-2, 6-0 Sunday in the final of the Pan Pacific Open.Hingis upset No. 4 Maria Sharapova in the semifinals, but she was broken three times in the first set and had a series of unforced errors in her fourth tournament of 2006 after a three-year retirement.

U.S. skeleton coach Tim Nardiello was fired by the sport's national federation for ignoring orders to stay away from the team during its final Olympic preparations.Nardiello, who was denied a credential to coach at the Turin Games, is in St. Moritz, Switzerland, where the four sliders representing the United States are training. The letter of dismissal was e-mailed Friday.Nardiello was suspended by the U.S. Bobsled and Skeleton Federation Dec. 31, accused of sexually harassing team members. He was reinstated 25 days later when an arbitrator found no credible evidence supporting those claims.But the U.S. Olympic Committee still refused to let him coach in Turin, citing other misconduct.

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. — Michael Phelps, winner of six gold medals in the 2004 Olympics, continued his domination of the FINA World Cup on Saturday.The 20-year-old from Baltimore lowered his American record in the 200-meter freestyle to 1:42.78, then earned his fourth victory of the meet by holding off Thiego Pereira of Brazil in 1:55.28 in the 200 individual medley.

BOSTON — The Red Sox and pitcher Josh Beckett settled their arbitration case Saturday, agreeing to a one-year contract for $4,325,000.
