Butler hunter records long-awaited triple trophy

It required a 10-year wait, but hunter Glenn Montgomery has his triple trophy.

Montgomery, 34, of Butler bagged a spring gobbler April 29 in Clinton Township, an 8-point buck Oct. 31 in Jefferson Township and a 113-pound bear Nov. 22 in Jefferson County, near Sigel.

"It's tough to get a triple anywhere, but it's especially rare when you hunt this close to home," Montgomery said.

A hunter since age 12, Montgomery has gotten four turkeys in his lifetime. The buck marked the fifth he's gotten during bow season.

It was also the biggest.

"I'm still looking for that true trophy buck," he said. "I enjoy bow season because it's more challenging.

"I won't shoot a bow unless I'm within 20 yards of the animal."

That was the case here. Montgomery laid scent and the buck ran directly in front of him.

"He was chasing a doe and came right out in the open," Montgomery said.

Montgomery never had even seen a bear, let alone shot at one, before this year. His father has a camp in Jefferson County where a group of eight men — Montgomery included — hunt together annually.

Mark Kretzer of Saxonburg bagged a bear at the camp in 2000. He was the first one of the eight ever to do so in 10 years of hunting trips.Kretzer got a triple trophy of his own that year."None of is had even seen a bear up there otherwise," Montgomery said. "We're always looking, always trying, but we're up there for the camaraderie as much as anything else."I'm just happy I was the second one of the group to get a bear."Montgomery said his grandfather, now 78, got his family involved in hunting."My pap's been in the woods his whole life and has never seen a bear," he said. "You just have to be lucky, I guess."
