PITTSBURGH — Pete Mackanin and Bruce Tanner, two of former Pittsburgh Pirates manager Lloyd McClendon's coaches, will work in the team's minor league system next season.

Mackanin, the Pirates' interim manager after McClendon was fired Sept. 6 and the bench coach for three seasons, will manage Bradenton of the Gulf Coast Rookie League.

Tanner, the former Pirates bullpen coach and the son of former Pirates manager Chuck Tanner, will be the pitching coach at Class A Williamsport.

Tim Leiper, who managed Class A Lynchburg last season, was promoted to Double-A Altoona, with Brandon Moore as coach and Ray Searage as pitching coach. Former Altoona manager Tony Beasley was recently hired as a New York Yankees roving minor league infield instructor.

Three Pirates minor league managers will return: Trent Jewett at Triple-A Indianapolis, Jeff Branson at Class A Hickory and Tom Prince at Class A Williamsport.

Jeff Andrews, the pitching coach at Altoona last season, has been promoted to Indianapolis.

The Pirates still must hire a manager at Class A full-season Lynchburg.

PITTSBURGH — Former Pittsburgh Steelers player Dwayne Woodruff will be joining the Allegheny County Common Pleas bench sooner than anticipated.Woodruff, 48, was elected to a 10-year term as judge on Nov. 8. But he'll take office sooner than other judges elected that day because the Pennsylvania Senate confirmed his previous nomination to the bench on Wednesday.Gov. Ed Rendell nominated Woodruff to the bench last year to replace Judge Gerard M. Bigley, who retired in January. Woodruff can take the bench as soon as his Senate confirmation papers arrive in the county. Others elected to the county bench last month will be sworn in Jan. 2.Woodruff starred as a defensive back for the Steelers from 1979 to 1990. He'll be assigned to the Family Court's juvenile division.

CHICAGO— The Chicago White Sox agreed to acquire right-hander Javier Vazquez from Arizona for right-hander Orlando Hernandez, reliever Luis Vizcaino and minor league outfielder Chris Young Wednesday.Vazquez was traded to Arizona last January as part of the deal that sent Randy Johnson to the Yankees. He went 11-15 with a 4.42 ERA for the Diamondbacks in 2005.Hernandez was 9-9 last season and has a career record of 70-49.

LOS ANGELES — Bill Mueller and the Los Angeles Dodgers agreed to a two-year contract worth about $9.5 million Wednesday, reuniting the former AL batting champion with Grady Little and Ned Colletti.Mueller, a switch-hitting third baseman, batted .295 with 10 homers and 62 RBI with Boston last season.

SAN ANTONIO — Struggling New Orleans Saints quarterback Aaron Brooks has been benched for the rest of the season.Coach Jim Haslett said Wednesday he was replacing Brooks with Todd Bouman because of the Saints' 3-10 record.Brooks has thrown 17 interceptions and 13 touchdown passes this season, marking the first time in his career he's had more interceptions than scoring passes.
