Biron wins 11th straight for Bufflalo
BUFFALO, N.Y. — Martin Biron put on quite a show for President Clinton and the resurgent Buffalo Sabres' enthusiastic fans.
Drawing "Marty! Marty!" chants from the crowd, Biron made 32 saves to win his 11th straight start in Buffalo's 4-3 victory over the Dallas Stars on Wednesday night.
"That's never happened, to be honest with you," Biron said. "When that happens, you work twice as hard because you want to keep it up and give them more to cheer at."
Clinton, attending the game as Sabres owner Tom Golisano's guest, visited the team's locker room before the game.
"It was awesome," coach Lindy Ruff said. "He talked about how he loves sports and going to hockey games. He thinks it's a great game in person."
It was, especially in the third period when Biron made 16 saves to extend his personal and franchise-record winning streak. He's the first NHL goalie to win 11 in a row since New Jersey's Martin Brodeur in 2000-01.
Derek Roy had a goal and an assist, and Maxim Afinogenov, Thomas Vanek and Daniel Briere also scored to help the Sabres run their winning streak to four.
Since a 6-1 loss to Ottawa on Nov. 12, Buffalo has won 12 of 14 games. The Sabres have 20 victories, their most since winning 20 of their first 29 games in 1979-80.
Jere Lehtinen, Steve Ott and Stephane Robidas scored for Dallas. The Stars had won five straight and 13 of their last 15.
"We wanted to make a statement that we're no pushovers, and that we've got a great team here" Roy said. "I think now every team is going to be ready to play us and not take us for granted anymore."
Afinogenov opened the scoring at 2:58 of the first period.
"That was huge, especially against this team," said Roy, who assisted on the goal. "That opened things up for us, and gave us some momentum."
Coming off a 2-1 victory in Toronto on Saturday night, the Stars struggled to keep up with the Sabres in the first period and a half.
"We just didn't have the jump right away," Stars forward Brenden Morrow said. "We expected a big game from them because they've been hot."
Roy and Vanek scored in the second period to make it 3-0, but Lehtinen and Ott countered with goals in a 11/2-minute span. Lehtinen leads Dallas with 16 goals.
Briere gave Buffalo a 4-2 lead in early in the third with his 13th goal, and Robidas completed the scoring with 7:01 to play.
"It was less about effort and more about execution," Dallas coach Dave Tippett said. "We had some good chances and didn't score and it caught up with us."
Biron made consecutive saves on close-range attempts by Jason Arnott and Bill Guerin early in the third and stopped Guerin again in the final minute.
"That's part of the game," Biron said. "Our job is to stop the puck."
Dallas goalie Marty Turco made 18 saves in an unsuccessful bid to become the NHL's first 17-game winner this season.
Dallas also failed to score on the power play, snapping its franchise-record 18-game streak with at least one goal with the man advantage. The Stars were scoreless on four power-play opportunities.
"Biron played great," Stars center Stu Barnes said. "He was rock solid."
