It's time to study Colts' backups

PHILADELPHIA — As always, there are a lot of questions heading into fantasy football playoff season. Whether Ryan Moats is worth picking up (hopefully) is not one of them.

The more rampant concern is what the undefeated Colts will do with their studs after they lock up homefield advantage, which could come as early as Sunday.

With a win at Jacksonville, an eight-point underdog, the playing time for Peyton Manning, Edgerrin James, Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne for the remainder of the season becomes a serious concern at a most crucial stretch.

"Those guys want to play, and they want to play all the time," Colts coach Tony Dungy said. "We don't let them vote, but we will take into consideration how they feel."

History is no help.

When the Colts were locked into the No. 3 seed last season, they had a meaningless game left at Denver. Manning and James played one series that game, but this situation is different. The Colts could be looking at three, meaningless games (in the thick of fantasy playoffs), plus a first-round bye. Rust, for that first playoff game, also is a consideration for the Colts coach.

"To be honest," Dungy said, "I don't know how I'll handle it. You never really know till you get there."

About the only thing fantasy players can do is look at Indy's backups as potential insurance.

Quarterback Jim Sorgi is not an attractive option, but running back Dominic Rhodes and wide receiver Brandon Stokley are. Developing tight end Bryan Fletcher is also worth considering for leagues that require that position. Other than that, good luck.

Bills wide receiver Lee Evans:His stock is up now that Eric Moulds has contracted T.O.-disease. With Moulds suspended a game for an apparent sideline dispute with an assistant coach, Josh Reed moves up the depth chart. Can't recommend him, though.Broncos running back Tatum Bell:Those hesitant to start Bell against the Ravens should rest easy now that linebacker Ray Lewis will not play. Bell will continue to share time with Mike Anderson, but considering the way Mike Shanahan likes to run the ball at home in December, he's still worth the risk.Giants quarterback Eli Manning:Unless your other option is his brother Peyton, Eli should get the nod against the Eagles.

Since we're on the subject, let's give away a prized Philadelphia Daily News fantasy football T-shirt. How many combined passing yards will the Manning brothers have this weekend? Peyton is at Jacksonville, Eli is at the Eagles. Closest to their total wins.Send your guess, along with your name and hometown, to fantasyfootball@phillynews.com (or fax to 215-854-5524) by noon Sunday. Tiebreaker will be the closest to Eli Manning's total. The winner will be announced next week.

Giants kicker Jay Feely:His trips to Shanksville these last two weeks have New York coach Tom Coughlin a little nervous. Feely owners should add an insurance policy.Raiders quarterback Kerry Collins:Marques Tuiasosopo is a tantalizing alternative for Collins owners, who shouldn't be surprised at his benching. The Raiders' final four games are at the Jets, Cleveland at home, at Denver and home against the Giants.Panthers running back Stephen Davis:Thursday he acknowledged that DeShaun Foster deserves the nod. Owners who watched Davis average 13 yards rushing the last three games knew this a long time ago.

Snow and winds in the 15-mph range are expected in Pittsburgh (vs. Chicago), Buffalo (vs. New England) and Cincinnati (vs. Cleveland). Green Bay (vs. Detroit) is expecting snow, but less wind.
