BEREA, Ohio — Browns rookie wide receiver Braylon Edwards will miss the rest of the season with a torn knee ligament, yet another setback for one of Cleveland's first-round draft picks.
Edwards, the No. 3 overall selection in the draft, tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee while trying to make a leaping catch in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 20-14 loss to Jacksonville.
Last season, tight end Kellen Winslow, the club's top pick in 2004, broke his leg in Week 2. He missed all this season after tearing his ACL in a motorcycle accident.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Louisville senior defensive end Elvis Dumervil won the Bronko Nagurski Trophy as the best defensive player in college football.Dumervil, the Division I-A leader with 20 sacks and 10 forced fumbles, edged Virginia Tech cornerback Jimmy Williams, Alabama linebacker DeMeco Ryans, Oregon tackle Haloti Ngata and Penn State end Tamba Hali in voting for the award.
INDIANA — Gary Edwards will return as head men's basketball coach at Indiana University of Pennsylvania on Wednesday and remain in that post for the remainder of the 2005-06 season, IUP President Tony Atwater said Monday.Edwards, however, will step down at the end of the season, the university said.In a prepared statement, the university said it recently completed an internal investigation of the men's basketball program and submitted the findings to the NCAA.The university said Edwards was serving a disciplinary suspension. He joined IUP in May 1996.
Keith Wynn's 26 points led a group of six players scoring in double digits as the Butler County Community College men's basketball team defeated Seton Hill, 104-78 Monday evening.Matt Lobaugh added 24 points for the Pioneers (5-4), while Ed Beasley had 17 and Chris Harmon added 12.Joel Rehm contributed 11 points and seven assists and Will Miller also scored 11 points.
Butler High School graduate and California (Pa.) University sophomore forward Kim Nowakowski has been named the PSAC-West Co-Player of the week after tallying double-doubles in wins against Kutztown and West Chester.Nowakowski managed career highs in both points (27) and rebounds (12) in the Vulcans' 76-49 win over Kutztown on Saturday.Against West Chester, she tallied a game-high 21 points and set another career-high in rebounds with 16 as the Vulcans prevailed 89-63.Nowakowski leads the team in scoring (14.3) and rebounding (10) per game. The Vulcans are currently 5-2 overall.
