Slumping Sharks keep losing
Star center Joe Thornton was traded from Boston to San Jose — and the Sharks certainly need him, especially since they lost their 10th straight game, 4-1 in Dallas Wednesday.
The Sharks managed only 18 shots against Stars goalie Marty Turco. Antti Miettinen scored on a penalty shot and Sergei Zubov added a power-play goal for Dallas, 10-2 in its last 12 games.
Jaroslav Svoboda and Brenden Morrow also scored for Dallas. Evgeni Nabokov, winless in his last 11 starts, stopped 23 shots for the Sharks.
At Philadelphia, Mike Knuble and Patrick Sharp scored in the second period and Robert Esche stopped 30 shots for the Flyers. Philadelphia had lost four consecutive home games after winning nine in a row at the Wachovia Center.
At Tampa, Fla., Ed Belfour came up short in his first bid to break a tie for second place on the NHL career victory list as Pavel Kubina scored a tiebreaking, power-play goal with 8:38 left.
At St. Paul, Minn., Jaroslav Balastik's goal in the third round of a shootout lifted Columbus.
At Chicago, Kyle Calder scored two power-play goals and Nikolai Khabibulin stopped 19 shots. Matt Ellison also scored a power-play goal for the Blackhawks, who snapped a three-game skid.
At Vancouver, British Columbia, Brendan Morrison scored the go-ahead goal on a breakaway late in the second period for the Canucks.
At Anaheim, Calif., Dustin Penner scored his first two NHL goals on power plays and assisted on another by Teemu Selanne, who extended his goal-scoring streak to five games. He and rookie Chris Kunitz scored 8 seconds apart in the second period, a franchise record for the shortest span between goals.
