NEW YORK — B.J. Ryan and the Toronto Blue Jays reached a preliminary agreement on a $47 million, five-year contract, a high-ranking baseball official said Friday.Ryan, a left-hander who turns 30 next month, is getting the largest deal given to a reliever, topping the $39.99 million, four-year contract Mariano Rivera had with the New York Yankees from 2001-04. Rivera just completed the first season of a $21 million, two-year deal with the Yankees.The baseball official spoke on condition of anonymity because Toronto had not yet announced the agreement. Ryan's agreement with Toronto was first reported by the New York Daily News on its Web site.Ryan had 36 saves in 41 chances last season for Baltimore and went 1-4 with a 2.43 ERA. He had a $2.6 million base salary, earned $200,000 in performance bonuses based on games finished and $25,000 for making the AL All-Star team.

PHILADELPHIA — The Phillies and the White Sox completed the trade that sends slugger Jim Thome to Chicago for center fielder Aaron Rowand.The trade was announced Wednesday, but wasn't official until the players passed their physicals Friday. Philadelphia also gets minor league left-hander Daniel Haigwood and a player to be named later. The Phillies are giving the White Sox $22 million as part of the deal, a baseball official told The Associated Press, speaking on condition of anonymity because the teams did not make that information public.

LONDON — George Best, one of the most dazzling and entertaining players in soccer history whose playboy living and drinking escapades became a staple of tabloid gossip, died Friday after decades of alcohol abuse. He was 59.Best, who starred in the 1960s and 1970s for Manchester United and Northern Ireland, had a liver transplant three years ago and had been hospitalized since Oct. 1 because of a reaction to medication to control his alcoholism.He appeared close to death last month when doctors discovered internal bleeding. He was readmitted to intensive care a week ago because of a lung infection and was put on life support. His condition deteriorated sharply Thursday.The Premier League said there will be a minute's silence before each game this weekend. Manchester United players will wear black armbands.

FINGAL, Australia — Australia's Robert Allenby increased his lead to five strokes in the Australian Open on Saturday despite a painful right hand injury that might force him to withdraw from the tournament.Allenby, a four-time winner on the U.S. PGA Tour, birdied the 18th for his second straight even-par 72 and a 9-under 207 total on the Moonah Links. The 1994 Australian Open winner opened with a course-record 9-under 63 on Thursday.Australia's Paul Sheehan (72) was second at 4 under, and two-time champion Aaron Baddeley (73) and Nick O'Hern (71) were 3 under.

LAKE LOUISE, Alberta — World Cup overall champion Bode Miller said he is being targeted for more doping tests after suggesting last month that regulations on banned substances be liberalized.After saying last month that he believes doping should be legalized — or at least the accepted levels of banned substances should be increased — Miller said Friday he was required to submit to drug tests on three consecutive weekends."Since I started talking out about the idea, I've been randomly tested three times, and nobody else on my team has been tested more than once," Miller said.
