Pens demote Fata, Koltsov, Scuderi

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Penguins shook up their roster Tuesday after a disappointing first six weeks of the season, sending forwards Rico Fata and Konstantin Koltsov and defenseman Rob Scuderi to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL after they cleared waivers.

The three had to go through waivers before they could be sent down.

Neither Fata nor Koltsov had a goal this season, even though both played on lines with Sidney Crosby or Mario Lemieux at some point of the season. Scuderi was scratched for nearly half the Penguins' first 21 games.

Called up from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for Tuesday night's game against Washington were forwards Michel Ouellet and Matt Hussey. Ouellet, a fourth-round draft pick in 2000, was second in the AHL with 29 points and 19 assists and had nine goals and 14 points in his previous 12 games.

Hussey played in three games with Pittsburgh in 2003-04, getting two goals and one assist. He had nine goals and 10 assists in 17 games at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton this season.

The Penguins made the moves after losing 15 of their first 21 games, with six losses in overtime. Earlier this season, they called up forward Erik Christensen and defenseman Ryan Whitney from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, and both are now among their ice-time leaders each game.
