Karns City seniors Brittni Grenninger, Nicole McElroy and Kayla Yough played key roles in the South's 5-1 girls soccer victory over the North in the recent Upper Allegheny Valley Soccer League Senior Game.
Grenninger was the game's MVP, scoring three goals and adding an assist. McElroy assisted on Grenninger's first goal and Yough played well defensively.
Grenninger and Mark Ferguson of the Karns City boys team were recently named MVP of their respective leagues.
Knoch football players Jordan Shoop (defensive back-punter) and Bill Elliott (linebacker) were named to the All-Greater Allegheny Conference first team in football.Elliott at center, Shoop at quarterback also earned second-team honors. Honorable mention selections were Joel Berger at receiver, Alex Whisler at running back and Curtis Howard at defensive back.
Mars graduate Mallory Bugel, a sophomore forward on the Westminster College women's soccer team, was named Academic All-America third team by the College Sports Information Directors of America.Bugel led the Presidents' Athletic Conference in scoring with 21 goals and 50 points. She has a 3.79 grade point average as a biology and chemistry major.
STATE COLLEGE — John T. White, an assistant Penn State football coach under Joe Paterno for 14 years, died Sunday, the school said. He was 85.White, who spent 28 years in the athletic department at Penn State, coached the defensive line for Paterno and his predecessor, Rip Engle. He produced several All-America linemen and contributed to a number of great Nittany Lion defenses — most notably the 1978 team that held eight opponents to 10 points or fewer, including three shutouts."J.T. was a great person and a great coach," Paterno said in a statement released by Penn State on Tuesday. "Everyone loved him. When the players he coached came back, they always went to see him."White spent 12 seasons under Engle and 14 under Paterno, leaving the staff in 1979. He served as assistant to the athletic director until he retired in 1982.
