Sorenstam closes with 10th victory

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Annika Sorenstam closed another spectacular year with her 10th LPGA Tour victory Sunday, holding off a spirited charge from Liselotte Neumann at the ADT Championship.

Sorenstam shot a 69 to finish at 6-under 282, two strokes ahead of Neumann (70), Michele Redman (68) and Soo-Yun Kang (68), and become the first player to successfully defend her title in the LPGA Tour version of the Tour Championship. She has won the event four times.

It was the second time Sorenstam has won at least 10 times in one LPGA season.

MIYAZAKI, Japan — Tiger Woods birdied the fourth hole of a playoff with Japan's Kaname Yokoo on Sunday to successfully defend his Dunlop Phoenix title.Woods, playing with an ankle injury that could force him to withdraw from the PGA Grand Slam this week in Hawaii, shot a 2-over 72 to match Yokoo (69) at 8-under 272 on the Phoenix Country Club course.Woods won six times on the PGA Tour this year, including major victories in the Masters and British Open.

HOMESTEAD, Fla. — Martin Truex won his second straight NASCAR Busch Series season title Saturday, finishing seventh as Ryan Newman won the Ford 300 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.Truex came into the race with a 64-point lead over Clint Bowyer and wound up winning by 68 points as Bowyer finished behind him in eighth.For Newman, a part-time performer in Busch, it was his sixth victory in nine races this season — all of them coming in his last seven races.

HOMESTEAD, Fla. — Two helicopters collided at the Homestead-Miami Speedway after the NASCAR championship Sunday, killing one pilot, authorities said.One helicopter was taking off from the speedway's helipad shortly before 9 p.m. while another was attempting to land.The other pilot died after being airlifted to a Miami hospital, a spokeswoman for the Miami-Dade Police Department said.

SHANGHAI, China — Roger Federer's record-chasing run ended Sunday with a five-set loss to David Nalbandian in the Tennis Masters Cup final.Nalbandian, who made the elite eight-man field because of injuries to top players, ended Federer's 35-match winning streak by rallying from two sets down for a 6-7 (4), 6-7 (11), 6-2, 6-1, 7-6 (3) victory. Federer had won his previous 24 finals and lost for only the fourth time this year.Federer finished one victory short of John McEnroe's Open era record (82-3) for best winning percentage in a season, ending 2005 at 81-4.
