Jagr, Rangers enjoy big weekend

NEW YORK — Jaromir Jagr, Henrik Lundqvist and the rest of the New York Rangers hated how the longest road trip of the season ended last week at Carolina.

Jagr was pointless for only the fourth time this season, and Lundqvist was touched up for a career-worst five goals in the blowout loss to the Hurricanes. A three-game winning run became a two-game losing streak as the Rangers headed home for a busy weekend against Carolina and Boston.

It all turned around at Madison Square Garden. After a one-goal win on Saturday in the rematch with the Hurricanes, Jagr had a goal and two assists, and Lundqvist made 32 saves to lift the Rangers to a 3-2 victory Sunday night over the Bruins.

While Lundqvist gave way to Kevin Weekes' in Saturday's 4-3 win against Carolina, Jagr started displaying his playmaking side in setting up three goals.

His 19th goal — 556th of his career — on Sunday, tied him with John Bucyk for 18th place on the NHL list. His assists on goals by Petr Prucha and Ville Nieminen provided the difference for the Rangers, who have won seven of 10.

"I always had more assists than goals," said Jagr, who has set up 788 for others.

Jagr displayed his scoring touch over the first 21 games of the season, and then dished out a healthy dose of his playmaking side with five assists in two games to go along with his NHL-leading 11th power-play goal of the season.

"I think that's the player," Rangers coach Tom Renney said. "He realizes he may not have the shot, so maybe the best thing is to move it."

Jagr has rediscovered his game and drive in his first full season in New York. He is scoring goals, setting them up, and even acting as a forechecker. He kept the puck away from the Bruins in the final moments as they pressed for the tying goal after pulling goalie Hannu Toivonen.

"He's a terrific playmaker, obviously," Renney said. "What I liked about his game on top of all that, there were times he had to be the first forechecker in, he had to be the first forward back. Jags was a great player tonight."

And so was Lundqvist.

He made 32 saves in his first start since the 5-1 defeat at Carolina. Lundqvist was beaten on third-period goals by Glen Murray and Patrice Bergeron, but he protected the slim lead late and helped hand Boston its first six-game losing streak since Feb. 11-23, 1997.

"I felt pretty good. It was a much more solid game for me than Carolina," Lundqvist said. "It's never fun to let five goals in and you're always disappointed in yourself and I know I can play better.

"It felt real good to have a win right away here so I can relax more and have more fun."

The Bruins (7-10-5) played hard but it wasn't enough to end their skid. Boston has led or been tied in the third period in five of the losses, including Sunday when they were even at 1.

"We were taking steps forward with this loss," Toivonen said. "This was one of our best efforts."

At Anaheim, Calif., Sami Salo scored his second goal of the game with 7:48 left to help Vancouver hand the host Mighty Ducks' their record-tying eighth straight loss.Rob Niedermayer's power-play goal 47 seconds into the third period tied the game for Anaheim, which also lost eight games in a row in October 1996.Vancouver's Trevor Linden scored on a penalty shot with a second left in the second period.Salo opened the scoring on a power play with 4:55 left in the first period, and Andy McDonald tied it on a power play midway through the second.

At Raleigh, N.C., Fredrik Modin had a goal and two assists, and Vincent Lecavalier and Brad Richards each added a goal and an assist for Tampa Bay.Ruslan Fedotenko also scored, and Vaclav Prospal had an assist to push his points streak to 13 games. The defending Stanley Cup champion Lightning have won three of four to move within six points of the Hurricanes in the Southeast Division.Justin Williams scored twice for Carolina, the second on a penalty shot.

At Glendale, Ariz., Ladislav Nagy had a goal and two assists, and David LeNeveu made 23 saves to help Phoenix extend Columbus' losing streak to five.Mike Johnson scored his second goal in three games and Zbynek Michalek, Boyd Devereaux and Geoff Sanderson also scored for the Coyotes. Gilbert Brule scored his first NHL goal for the Blue Jackets, who have lost nine of 10.
