IN BRIEF

Numerous Mars and Summit Academy varsity football players were named to the Tri-County North all-star team.

On offense, Planets tight end Matt Whittington, lineman Pete King, running back Paul Ferrese and kicker Tim Wirtz made the first team. Wide receiver Tim Frye, running backs Josh Keil and Dave Pisarcik made the second team.

On defense, lineman King and linebackers Pisarcik and Whittington made the first team, lineman Bill Cress, backs Ferrese and Keil and punter Wirtz made the second team.

For Summit Academy, receiver Kasil Butler made the first-team offense with tight end Tyrone Noaks, lineman John Payne and running back Delaney Huggins making th esecond team.

Butler was a first-team defensive back, and linebacker Joseph James made second team.

Five members from both the Karns City varsity boys and girls soccer teams were named All-South Division by the UAVSL.Seniors Mark Ferguson, Cody McElravy, Josiah Grubbs, Andrew Harmon and Zach Fleeger achieved the honors for the Gremlins boys.Seniors Brittni Grenninger, Nikki McElroy, Kristen Barnhart and Adrienne Olszak, along with sophomore Allie Kepple, gained the honors for the girls.

Slippery Rock University freshman middle blocker Anastasia Urbanik was named PSAC West Women's Volleyball Rookie of the Year.Urbanik ranked fourth in the PSAC with 3.72 kills per game and her .336 hitting percentage was the second-best in school history.Teammate Sarah Kirsch, a junior setter, joined Urbanik, on the PSAC West first team.

Four former Butler County football players were honored by All-Presidents' Athletic Conference for their performances in college this fall.Seneca Valley graduates Steve Minton, a sophomore running back at Thiel, and Mike Sklarsky, a senior linebacker at Washington & Jefferson, made the first team.Mars graduate Ricky Gable, a junior offensive lineman at Thiel, and Karns City graduate Jeff Wagner, a junior linebacker for the Tomcats, made the second team.

Wednesday's pro boxing card, featuring Butler's Brian Minto vs. Pittsburgh's Gary Winman in the heavyweight main event, has been finalized.Minto (21-1, 12 KOs) faces Winman (25-16, 17 KOs) at the Mountaineer Race Track and Gaming Resort in Chester, W.Va. Bouts begin at 7:30 p.m.Other fighters on the card include Verquan Kimbrough (13-0-1, 6 KOs) of Aliquippa, Monty Meza-Clay (17-0, 11 KO's) of Rankin, George Klinesmith (21-10-3, 13 KOs) of Bloomingdale, Ohio, and Joe Wyatt (121-0, 13 KOs) of Pittsburgh.Tickets are $125 for platinum, $60 for gold, $40 reserved and $20 general admission.
