Woods, Singh paired at Tour Championship
ATLANTA — Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh paired together in the final group doesn't have the same attraction it might have at the start of the season.
Woods already is looking back at one of his better years on the PGA Tour. He captured two majors and two World Golf Championships among his six titles this year, and a victory at the season-ending Tour Championship will make him the first $11 million man in golf.
Singh is only assured of finishing second on the money list.
"I had a great year, an absolute great year," Woods gushed Wednesday after a practice round at East Lake. "The changes that I made were to become more consistent in the major championships, and that's exactly what happened. I was there with a chance to win on the back nine on Sunday at every one. And that's a great feeling."
Woods won the Masters in a playoff against Chris DiMarco, then went wire-to-wire in the British Open to join Jack Nicklaus as the only men to capture the career Grand Slam twice.
Despite missing the cut two weeks ago at Disney — his second weekend off this year — he has earned $9.9 million and can break the earnings record Singh set last year by winning the $1.17 million first prize at East Lake.
Singh is one better than Woods. He has missed the last two cuts, at Disney and last week at Innisbrook. Still, he won four times this year and has $7.7 million, more than $2 million ahead of Mickelson. That doesn't matter, anyway, because Mickelson decided not to play.
"I not disappointed with the way I play, I was just disappointed with the way I scored," Singh said about his last two cuts. "I went back home and analyzed my golf game, and it all came down to missing a few putts here and there. Last week if I had made the cut, I probably would have gone ahead and won it.
"I'm playing well. I just need to score well. It may happen this week."
